A giant panda believed to have been the oldest ever kept in captivity has died at the age of 38, officials say.
The death of Jia Jia, whose age in human terms was more than 100 years, was announced by the Hong Kong theme park where she lived.
Her condition had worsened rapidly in recent weeks and she had lost her appetite, the park said.
She was put down by vets at Ocean Park, her home since 1999.
"She was a member of our family and she will be deeply missed... she has served as an important animal ambassador for her species," the park said in a statement.

The park said that in the last two weeks, Jia Jia's daily food intake had dropped from over 10kg to less than 3kg per day, and she had lost weight.
"Over the past few days, she has been spending less time awake and showing no interest in food or fluids.
"Her condition became worse this morning. Jia Jia was not able to walk about without difficulties and spent the day laying down."
Vets took the decision to put the giant panda down to prevent suffering, the park said.
In a statement obtained by BBC Chinese, a Hong Kong government spokesman thanked the park for providing Jia Jia with care and support and added that it was "saddened" by the news.
The park in Hong Kong held a high-profile celebration for Jia Jia's 37th birthday at her enclosure in July 2015.
Born in 1978 in the wild in Sichuan, China, Jia Jia was given to Hong Kong in 1999 to mark the semi-autonomous city's handover by Britain two years earlier.
Pandas normally live to around 20 years of age in the wild, and 25 in captivity.

Syria conflict: IS 'ousted from symbolic town of Dabiq'

Image captionRebels took Dabiq after IS militants withdrew, a monitoring group said

Turkish-backed rebels have captured the symbolically important Syrian town of Dabiq from the Islamic State group, rebel commanders and monitors say.
Dabiq was under "full control" of Turkish-backed Syrian rebels, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.
The small northern town holds great value for IS because of a prophecy of an apocalyptic battle, and features heavily in its propaganda.
The advance on Dabiq is part of a wider offensive by Syrian rebel groups.
Ahmed Osman, the commander of the Sultan Murad rebel group, told Reuters news agency that the group had also recaptured the neighbouring village of Soran.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 1,200 IS fighters had been brought in to defend Dabiq.
In other Syria developments:
  • At a meeting of foreign ministers in London, US Secretary of State John Kerry said new sanctions were being considered against Russia and Syria because of their actions in the city of Aleppo
  • There are reports of at least one person dead and dozens injured in an explosion on the edge of the makeshift Rukban camp, where some 75,000 Syrian refugees are trapped on their country's border with Jordan

Analysis: Sebastian Usher, BBC Arab affairseditor
The battle for Dabiq has been building for weeks - with one village after another being seized from IS by rebel fighters backed by Turkish airstrikes.
In the end, it seems to have fallen swiftly after the announcement of the final assault on Saturday.
Strategically, it's not a major prize. But IS has embraced it as a symbol of its apocalyptic vision of all-out confrontation with its enemies.
The town is named in one Hadith - or saying by the Prophet Mohammed - as the site of the climactic battle between Muslims and non-Muslims before the end of the world. The group named its online magazine after it, but has downplayed its significance recently, saying this battle is not the epic that was prophesied.

A commander of one rebel group, the Hamza Brigade, told the Associated Press that resistance from IS was "minimal".
Saif Abu Bakr said IS withdrew towards the larger town of Al-Bab to the south.
He said about 2,000 rebel fighters were involved in the offensive.
They were supported by Turkish tanks and artillery, and airstrikes from international coalition warplanes.

Dabiq is just 10km (six miles) from the border with Turkey.
In August, Turkey launched an offensive to clear the border region of militants, meaning both IS and Kurdish rebels fighting IS.
In September, the Turkish prime minister said the 91km borderline was "entirely secured" and "all the terrorist organisations were pushed back".
A war that started with an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad has now split Syria into many parts. It has been going on for more than five years and has claimed 300,000 lives.

Munster Rugby head coach Anthony Foley has died suddenly at their team hotel in Paris.
Foley, 42, died overnight at the hotel, where the team were staying prior to Sunday's game against Racing 92.
The European Champions Cup game has been postponed following the former Ireland international's death.
A statement by the Irish Rugby Football Union said: "The IRFU and Munster Rugby pass on our deepest sympathy to all of Anthony's family and friends."
It added: "We ask for privacy for the family at this sad time."

A decorated playing career

Foley, whose father Brendan also played for Ireland, made 201 appearances in the back row for Munster in a playing career that spanned 13 years.
He made his debut in 1995 against Swansea in the province's first match in the Heineken Cup - a competition in which he would later captain his side to victory in 2006, having twice finished as a runner-up (in 2000 and 2002).
He would also captain Ireland three times in winning 62 caps, having made a try-scoring debut in the Five Nations defeat by England in January 1995.
He was replaced as Munster captain by Paul O'Connell for the 2007-08 season, at the end of which he announced his retirement and joined their coaching staff.
Foley initially took over as Munster forwards coach in 2011 - a role he briefly undertook with Ireland during the 2012 Six Nations - before graduating to head coach in 2014 after the departure of Rob Penney.
Munster appointed South African Rassie Erasmus as the club's director of rugby in July but Foley's job title remained head coach.
